It may seem a bit strange to be reading a “year in review” post from a team that has only existed for about a year now but not yet kicked a soccer ball, but here we are. While we didn’t step on the field in 2020, it was still a busy year for Lansing Common FC.
How it started:

How it’s going:

As we prepare for 2021, we wanted to check in on how things have gone in 2020.
- Building an identity – We held our first meeting as an elected board in January, and spent the next 2 months meeting with our community to develop our identity, including name, crest, and colors.
- We Are Common – We introduced Lansing Common FC to the world in July with this video, went semi-viral on Twitter, and finally got to taste the delicious Common Cause beer that was brewed for us by our front jersey sponsor and Lansing’s soccer bar, Ozone’s Brewhouse.
- Speaking of Sponsors – We’ve received amazing support from the Lansing community and are thankful for the awesome sponsors we’ve been able to partner with, including:
- Ozone’s Brewhouse – front jersey sponsor
- MetroNet Fiber – jersey sleeve sponsor
- Highland Plastics Inc. – jersey sleeve sponsor
- Jay Biggs Realty – back of jersey sponsor
- Gabriels Community Credit Union
- Strange Matter Coffee Co – who we partnered with on The Early Bird blend.
- Diehard Scarves
- Growing membership – In July we hit 100 members (we launched membership on July 27). In September we passed the 200 member mark. At time of writing we sit at 223 members, which is an amazing sign of support from our community.
- A community club – Through support from our members and supporters, we’ve been able to find creative ways to support our community, including:
- Donating $400 to the Lansing Educational Advancement Foundation through our scarf competition with Livonia City FC.
- Donating almost $1,200 to the Salus Center to help them maintain operations
- Partnering with Strange Matter Coffee to donate a portion of each sale of The Early Bird blend to support Strange Matter’s efforts to support local healthcare workers with coffee and donuts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Building towards the 2021 season – In September we announced Josh Oakley as our first-ever head coach. Our members also selected our 2021 home jersey design. We may be biased, but they look pretty awesome.

We’re incredibly excited for the support we’ve received from the Mid-Michigan area and across the country since our launch in July. This year has been incredibly difficult for so many. We’re grateful for the support we’ve received despite the challenges so many have faced and we hope Lansing Common FC has been able to bring some positivity and excitement for the future.
Thanks, as always, for your support. We look forward to continuing to build this club with you in 2021.
