As our inaugural season approaches, we wanted to give you more of an introduction to the players who will represent Lansing Common on the field this summer. Today, it’s time to get to know Esteban Russell.
What position do you play and what do you think Lansing Common fans will enjoy most about the way you play?
I play as either a forward or as an attacking center midfielder. I think Lansing Common fans will enjoy my ability to break through the different lines of defense with my passing and look to set up the best opportunity to score whether that’s for myself or a teammate.
You’ll be one of the older guys on Lansing Common FC, what made you want to come back and keep playing this summer? I imagine it’ll be a pretty tough time commitment around everything else you have going on.
It’s always a great opportunity to play for the community that I played for growing up. I would love to help give back by doing my part to make Lansing Common a long-lasting team that the community can take pride in!
What do you think is the most important thing you can teach some of the younger guys on the team this year?
I look forward to teaching the younger players the balance of playing confidently and playing within the team. Also, just being an open outlet that they can go to for any questions they may have!
You don’t have a college team to play at to keep you in playing shape right now, so what will you be doing to get prepped for the season?
Luckily, this is not the first summer season that I will be playing without having a college team to play with in the off-season. I will be using all that I’ve learned to hold myself accountable to make sure I am in the best shape I can be to support the team.
What was your favorite moment you have ever had on a soccer field?
Scoring an away goal for WMU Men’s soccer against MSU at DeMartin Stadium. It was a culmination of hard work and proving a point that allowed for such a great feeling.
What hobbies do you have when you aren’t playing soccer?
Very typical answer, but anything active and outside. As I have gotten older I have fallen in love with golf and trying to get more and more competitive at that, which has helped my mindset and resolve on the soccer field!
